Pele Curse...

Pele is also said to curse Hawaii visitors who return to their homeland with volcanic rock. This is a legend, stemming from a story originally created by the late Narou Tovley at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in order to preserve the park. Visitors were damaging sites by removing rocks and artifacts.

Many lava rock pieces are shipped back to Hawaii from around the world from people who claim to have experienced horrible misfortune since removing the rocks, and asking to be forgiven with letters and a small gift, like a necklace or fresh fruit.

The modern legend does have a strong basis in Hawaiian culture, as the earth is considered the mother of humanity. To wantonly take rocks without good reason and proper protocol is looked on by many Hawaiians and people who have adopted Hawaiian culture as equivalent to grave robbing.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words...

Randy,
Thanks so much for the photos. It was a real pleasure diving with you while on Oahu. You helped turn a day with poor vis in to one filled with turtles octopus and dolphins at no extra charge. Not only were your prices beyond reasonable, but the service was above and beyond what I expected especially on such short notice! Thank you! If we ever end up on Oahu again, I will give you a call! -Scott

Hi Randy
I thank you very mucho for unforgettable experience  underwater Oahu, it wasn’t my first time diving but after so many years of absence it felt like it was-it really was discovery as you named it. Thank you for fast delivery of these really extraordinary photosof Oahu, now I have something in hand to boast about. I also thank your lady associate didn’t catch her name but caught her warm friendly attitude for which I am grateful. I suspect she is Amber from your staff presentation-curiosity: I was a lawyer back in Yugoslavia too
Hope will stay in touch
Warm greetings from Paul -Pavle

Thankyou, thankyou, thank you! I'm back home in DC, but it's 2am and I'm still awake because I'm still on Hawaii time :)
-Beth

Thanks a lot! Those pictures scuba diving Oahu look awesome! I will let you know about the ear. My ENT doc said it might just be swollen and irritated. So I'll let it rest. Thanks so much for the great experience!

Aloha Randy,
Thank you so much for the really wonderful days of diving around Oahu, fantastic door to door service and great pics.  You don't know how much it meant to me to dive again and a good part of my enjoyment was feeling safe and informed thanks to you - you are a really great teacher.  I hope to always keep open to adventure and especially if it involves water.  Most likely you will be seeing me again. Wishing you the best
-Mahalo, Diane

We made it home yesterday evening after a full 24 hours of traveling, but we had fond memories of scuba diving Oahu in Hawaii to talk about the whole way. I know we will be back... Nick never did end up catching a bonefish, so now he is more determined than ever, and that means I will get in on that deep wreck dive at some point. I have several friends who are certified to dive as well and are talking about trips to the area in the future, so I will send them on to you.
Have a great day! Thanks again! :)
-Amy

Randy,
Assume, thanks! I had a great time diving with you. If you ever need another testimonial or want to give someone my email as a reference, I would be happy to. I also told my buddy I stayed with to recommend you if anyone ever asks him for a recommendation.
-Peter

Thanks, Randy.  As you know, I am a great fan and hope to dive again with you in Oahu, great photos of the turtle and eel.
-All the best, Joel

Thank you so much for the pics and the dives!  We had an awesome time!!
-Cheers! Jason & Erica

Randy, Thanks for your time and your helpfulness today at the power plant. "unknown" first-time sites can be a challenge for some of us. It's always good to have a voice of experience around for those times, and you were in the right place at the right time for us.
Many blessings on you in your endeavors!
-Kevin and Anne

Hi Randy, I dove with you back in May, around Memorial Day weekend. I just wanted to say thanks again, I had an awesome time out there scuba diving Oahu. If I ever get a chance to come back out there, I'll definitely be looking you up. Take care.

Hi Randy! You're awesome! Thank you so much for remembering us and sending the pictures. We might be out in April and we'll look you up! Take care and say hi to some fishies for us :)
-Liz

Been meaning to send this for a while.
I was in Kailua in oct and dove with Aaron's on one day and barefoot the next.
I would use Barefoot again in a heartbeat. Randy is a great guy and you get picked up at hotel and the time commitment is much less than Aaron's, less money also.
Really no downside.
Thanks for the recommendation.
-Mike

Randy - Thanks again for your patience with me, you're a great teacher and all-round great guy! What you taught me may have just saved my life today, or at least helped me tremendously. (Jack goes on to explain a situation during dive training with another instructor). Thanks again for your emphasis on safety and good fundamentals, and for always looking out for me. I appreciate it today even more than yesterday!
-Jack

Randy, Thanks for the pics. They are great. Your tip just went up ...ha-ha.
- Dene

Hi Randy, Thanks for sending the pictures our way, and thanks so much for the instruction. We really did have a great time and you made diving a reality for Elizabeth.
All the best...-Ryan

Randy, Just wanted to say thanks again for a great certification experience.  We really had a great time and you helped to make this a very memorable trip to Hawaii.  Hopefully we will be back next year around the same time and we look forward to visiting again.
We already signed-up for continued course work here at home which begins later this month (buoyancy and emergency response classes). Since we are in New Jersey, we will have to wait for the summer to do Advanced Open Water... Unfortunately, the waters will not be nearly as pleasant as Oahu.
Please keep us posted on your travels if you decide to leave Hawaii. Who knows, maybe we can dive together another time.
Best regards, -Robert and Alanna
